Sudanese president vows unity gov’t to work for national interests

Aug 31, 2005 (Khartoum) — Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir vowed here Wednesday that the upcoming unity government will serve the national interests, the official SUNA news agency reported.

At a joint session of newly-formed National Assembly and Council of States, Bashir said the new government will encourage dialogue between civilizations and respect for international human rights and basic freedom and improve relations with neighboring countries.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a peaceful and final solution to the Darfur conflict and support for an African Union initiative on the issue.

On the southern Sudan peace deal, the president said the government will give priority to the voluntary return of the displaced people and will provide them with necessary service for their settlement.
