Uganda : Disband IDP Camps – FDC.

Charles Ariko, New Vision.

Sept 6, 2005 (Kampala) — Following recent reports that 1,000 people die every week in internally displaced people’s (IDP) camps, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has called for the closing down of the camps.

FDC spokesman Wafula Oguttu yesterday equated the continued stay in the camps to a slow genocide.

Oguttu said besides people dying in big numbers, there were cases of suicide by people who cannot cope with the dehumanising conditions that they have been subjected to in the camps.

Oguttu said between 10-15 IDPs reportedly commit suicide every week.

Since the government says Kony has been pushed to Sudan, why not allow people to go back to their villages?” Oguttu asked.

Reagan Okumu, the deputy executive coordinator, said President Museveni should be held accountable for all the deaths that have occurred in IDP camps.
