Sudanese govt, calls on AU, UN to put pressure on Darfur rebels
Sept 7, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese government has called on the AU and the UN to surpass the point of condemnation to the flagrant violations which were perpetrated by the rebel movements in Darfur in the past two weeks.
According to SUNA, the government also, called them to move to the stage of compelling these movements to abide strictly by the decisions of the AU and the UN, and to release the citizens who were abducted by the movements last month at Malam area, in South Darfur and to return their property.
This call was reflected by the acting state minister for foreign affairs, Najib al-Khair Abdelwahab, during his meeting Wednesday at his office with representative of the AU and assistant of the UN secretary-general representative to Sudan.
The minister also reflected the government warning that the failure of the AU and the UN to compel the rebel movements to abide by their decisions will result in aborting the international community’s efforts and brings back the conditions in Darfur to the first square.
Abdelwahab conveyed to the AU and the UN officials the government’s worry over the rebel movement’s continuous disregard to the decisions of the AU and the UN, especially those which incriminate aggression and oblige the international community to punish the aggressor.
Meanwhile, the AU’s representative affirmed his mission’s denunciation to the rebel movements’ acts. He stressed the keenness of the AU’s mission to work for the release of the abducted people and their properties.
He warned the rebel movements from the negative impacts which will result from the continuity of their acts and violations on the efforts to resume dialogue and negotiations in Abuja.
Assistant of the UN representative to Sudan has affirmed the readiness of the UN mission to coordinate efforts with the AU Commission and to do its best for the release of the abducted citizens and the return of their properties. He also expressed the UN mission’s keenness to make a success the task of the AU for monitoring the cease-fire and restoration of stability in Darfur states.
