AU mediator meets Chadian officials ahead of Darfur talks

Sept 10, 2005 (NDJAMENA) — AU chief negotiator Salim Ahmed Salim, and Chadian officials held a meeting at the Foreign Ministry to prepare the peace talks planned for Abuja, Nigeria, the Chadian radio reported.

Flanked by Territorial Administration Minister Mahamat Ali Abdallah and Foreign Minister Ahmad Allam-mi, the AU chief negotiator reassured national and international opinion of the effective holding of the talks scheduled for 15 September.

Regarding the Sudanese Liberation Movement’s (SLM) demand that the Abuja talks be postponed, the principal mediator declared that measures have been taken for the effective holding of the Abuja II talks.

Salim said ” I was in Khartoum and Darfur, where I met with officials of the government and the armed movements. I also met with Libyan leaders and officials in Tripoli, all as part of preparations for the next round. Given Chad’s important role in the process it is normal that I come here to have discussions with Chadian officials.”

The Sudanese government has asked the AU to accelerate negotiations with the rebels whereas the SLM is asking for a postponement of the Abuja talks.

Salim said that mediators have taken into account all positions. As a result, the official opening will take place on 15 September, but discussions of substantial issues will take place several days afterwards.

Talks will begin with workshops and a seminar, if the SLM must hold its conference, it is still possible to have the negotiations on time.

The two rebel Darfur factions are reticent, the national mediation committee members intend to support Ahmed Salim so that he can conclude the mission he has begun.
