Japan provides 32m dollars in emergency assistance to Sudan

16 Sept 2005 (TOKYO) — The Japonese government has decided to provide a total of about 32m dollars in emergency assistance to Sudan to support the country’s reconstruction and peace efforts, the Foreign Ministry said Friday.

The amount is part of Japan’s pledge, made in April during an international donor conference for Sudan, to provide 100m dollars in aid to Sudan.

At the conference held in Oslo, donors offered a combined 4.5bn dollars over a three-year period through 2007 to help rebuild the strife-torn African country.

Of the total assistance of 32.1m dollars, about 10m dollars is intended for the UN World Food Programme to take care of road construction and repairs, and some 8.9m dollars to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to support refugees and internally displaced people, the ministry said.

The aid also consists of an estimated 8.6m dollars to the UN Children’s Fund and about 4.6m dollars to the International Organization for Migration.
