Sudan sets up special Attorney Office for Crimes against Humanity
Sept 18, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — The Minister of Justice, Ali Mohamed Osman Yassin, has issued a decree on establishment of an Attorney Office for the Crimes against Humanity.
The office is to assume the jurisdiction concerning the crimes against humanity as included in the Criminal Procedure Act for 1991, the International Humanitarian Law, the international conventions to which Sudan is party and any other relevant law.
The United Nations Security Council passed a late-night resolution referring Darfur to the International Criminal Court (ICC) on March 31, 2005.
This resolution gives the ICC authority to investigate and prosecute those most responsible for massive human rights violations committed in the western Sudanese region.
