New govt works to achieve peace in all parts of Sudan – FM

Sept 26, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese Foreign Minister, Lam Akol Ajawin, said Monday that the goal of the Government of National Unity was to achieve peace, not only in the south, but in all parts of Sudan.

This affirmation came in a meeting between Ajawin and the UN special adviser for the prevention of genocide, Juan Mendez, and his accompanying delegation at his office today.

The minister welcomed the delegation and thanked it for its concern over what was happening in Sudan.

He pointed out that humanitarian issues were of concern to the international community.

He stressed the importance of respecting what had been agreed upon in the humanitarian and the cease-fire aspects, hoping that the rebel factions in Darfur would unite so that a solution could be reached to the problem.

Meanwhile, Mendez lauded the reception accorded him by the officials during his stay in Darfur and Khartoum.

He said that the aim of his visit was to protect civilians from genocide, which could happen, affirming the importance of reconciliation among the communities in Darfur in order to help bring stability to the region.
