Governors for southern Sudan states sworn in

Oct 1, 2005 (JUBA) — The newly-appointed governors of the southern states on Friday 30 September took the oath before the First Vice- President and President of the government of Southern Sudan, Lt-Gen Salva Kiir Mayardit, in the presence of Vice-President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Riak Machar and the Chief Justice of Southern Sudan.

Addressing the oath-taking ceremony, the first vice-president and President of the Government of Southern Sudan instructed the governors to spare no efforts in developing the southern states and providing services to the citizens, stressing the importance of selecting efficient employees in the South.

According to the state-run SUNA news agency, he explained that the government of the South will combat any phenomenon of corruption, urging the new governors to consider transparency, while managing the public funds and to focus on development in order to cement the peace.

The governor of Bahr al-Jabal State, Maj-Gen Clement Wani, spoke on behalf of the governors of the southern states, affirming that they will work to implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, development and preparing the citizens for the coming elections.

Meanwhile, Vice President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Riek Machar, took oath of office Friday before the the oath-taking ceremony of governors.

In this occasion, Machar said there are a lot of challenges facing the government of southern Sudan following the set up of the constitutional structures, top of which are repatriation and resettlement of refugees and displaced persons, removing mines and opening of roads to facilitate the movement.

In this regard, he appealed to the international community to fulfill its commitments toward the peace, development and rehabilitation of the South, describing the responses as slow. Machar said that according to the World Bank, the total funds presented to the South so far reached only 60 million US dollars.
