Italian troops arrive in Sudan to replace current forces in Darfur

Oct 3, 2005 (ROME) — Italian Ministry of Defense on Monday announced the arrival of its forces in Sudan to replace Italian troops currently working on peace-keeping missions and protecting UN delegations in Darfur.

In a press statement, the ministry said that the force comprises of 42 soldiers, noting that the Italian military forces stranded for the Sudan in April comprise of 220 soldiers.

It further said that the Italian force’s mission will guard the UN offices and employees in Darfur, create quick deployment teams to confront specific threats in the Sudanese capital Khartoum, in addition to executing sudden surveillance missions.
