Sudan appeals to donors to fulfill pledges
Oct 4, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir on Tuesday renewed appeal to donor countries to live up to their commitments at a donors conference held in the Norwegian capital Oslo in April 2004 to support Sudan’s peace process.
He made the appeal during a meeting with Norwegian Minister of International Development, Hilde Johnson, who is visiting the country.
He appreciated the role of Johnson in supporting Sudan’s peace process and enhancing stability and development.
Meanwhile, Sudanese First-Vice President and leader of the former southern rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement Salva Kiir Mayardit, who met Johnson in Juba, the capital of the southern autonomous region, called on the international community to fulfill their commitments to support Sudan’s reconstruction and implementation of a peace deal ending a 21-year civil war.
The Norway minister, who leaves office later this month, said that Norway decided to offer 100 million US dollars as an additional contribution to reconstruction in southern Sudan.
