Eight killed by landmine in Sudan
KHARTOUM, Oct 4, 2003 (dpa) — Eight people were killed and several injured when a car hit a landmine in central Sudan’s Nuba Mountains, a press release said Saturday.
The incident occurred on Friday when a vehicle belonging to the Asil Landmines Organisation ran over a landmine while carrying a number of people from Kauda to Karkar in the Nuba Mountains.
Hassan Obeid, coordinator of the Sudan Campaign to Ban Landmines (SCBL), said in a press statement Saturday that members of his staff were reported among the dead.
The Nuba mountains region constitutes one of Sudan’s three conflict areas and is controlled by the Sudan People’s Liberation Army.
The injured were rushed to Lokichoggio refugee centre in Kenya.
