150 Sudanese back to Khartoum from Iraq

Oct 8, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — Some 150 Sudanese nationals have arrived in Jordan on their way to Khartoum within the framework of a voluntary repatriation programme.

In a statement to the pro-ruling party Sudanese Media Centre (SMC), Awad Mursy Taha, director of the consuls and emigration department at the Sudanese Foreign Ministry, said his office had addressed some of the problems facing the Sudanese nationals in Iraq. This was through the Sudanese embassy in Baghdad in coordination with Iraqi Ministry of Interior.

He anticipated that a large number of Sudanese would return home, through Jordan, as joint efforts are being made by Sudanese embassies in Baghdad and Amman.

The official added that the International Organization for Migration had honoured its pledge to assist in the repatriation of Sudanese from Iraq via Jordan.

He indicated that 300 Sudanese nationals are currently living in Baghdad.
