Eight Sudanese men killed in landmine blast

KHARTOUM, Oct 4 (AFP) — Eight men were killed when a landmine blew up under a lorry in the Nuba Mountains region of central Sudan, a de-mining official said here Saturday.

An unspecified number of people were injured and evacuated by air to Lokichokio, in north Kenya, the coordinator of the Sudanese anti-landmines organisation, Hussein al-Obaid, told the official SUNA news agency.

The explosion happened Friday in area under the control of the southern rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA). “Some limbs were flung 45 metres (about 50 yards) away,” said Obaid.
