Southern Sudan parliament to discuss draft constitution
Oct 9, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — The Interim Legislative Council of southern Sudan will on Monday 10 October start its deliberations on the draft interim constitution for the southern Sudan.
The presidential adviser, Ali Tamim Fartak, has anticipated that the council will finalize its deliberations and approve the constitution in a period of seven to 10 days to be presented to the first vice-president, Lt-Gen Salva Kiir Mayardit, for scrutiny to verify if it conforms with the interim national constitution before signing it.
In a press statement to the pro- ruling National Congress (NC) party SMC news service, Fartak has said that the formation of the southern government depends on the approval of the interim constitution for the south.
He however downplayed the delay in the formation of the southern government.
Fartak further disclosed that the southern government would be announced after the approval of the constitution for the south, and will be made up of 18 ministers, three ministers loyal to the NC and three others loyal to the other southern Sudanese political parties.
He further pointed out that the seats in the southern Sudanese government will be shared as per what was bargained in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement which gave 70 percent of the seats to the Sudan People Liberation Movement, 15 percent to the National Congress and 15 percent to other southern Sudanese political parties.
