Sudan seeks removal of AU chief in Khartoum

Oct 10, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — The African Union would recall its representative in Sudan after accusation made against the Sudanese government on the deterioration of security situation in Darfur, a pro-ruling NC party media said.

Baba_Gana_Kingibe_1.jpgIn a press statement to Sudanese Media Centre, the director of the African Union bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Siraj al-Din Hamid said that the chairman of the AU Commission Alpha Oumar Konare would take a decision to recall the African Union Mission in the Sudan (AMIS) representative in Khartoum, Baba Gana Kingibe.

The Sudanese official pointed out that this decision is as a result of discussions between president Omar Al-Bashir, and the chairman of AU Commission in Addis Ababa recently.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Au Commission reaffirmed, in a press statement, his full support to, and confidence in, the AMIS leadership for it “tireless efforts and dedication to the cause of peace in Darfur”.

The Foreign Ministry has denied that the statement issued by the Sudanese embassy in Addis Ababa, in which it levelled accusations against the head of the AU mission in Khartoum, has created a diplomatic crisis between the government and the AU mission.

Hamid further said that the statement issued by the Sudanese embassy in Addis Ababa is statement of opinion and a response to the transgression committed by the AU envoy in Khartoum.
