Sudan’s FM calls for improved ties with Eritrea
Oct 12, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese Foreign Minister , Lam Akol, has expressed his hopes that the ongoing talks in Khartoum between the Sudanese and Eritrean sides would result in improved ties between the two countries.
In a press statement to the official SUNA news agency, the minister said the Eritrean delegation’s visit was aimed at improving Sudanese-Eritrean ties.
He urged the two sides to complete official talks so as to crystallize what could be done together.
The Sudanese-Eritrean talks which were chaired by the minister of state in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Asammani al-Wasilah, and the Eritrean acting minister of foreign affairs, Mohamed Omar, began on Monday 10 October and is expected to end its works tomorrow.
On the other side, the Independent al-Khartoum newspaper called today Eritrea and the Sudan to “completely refrain from interfering in each other’s internal affairs. Therefore at this very moment, the principle of non-interference implies that Asmara should stop dealing with the Sudanese opposition and Khartoum should stop dealing with the Eritrean opposition.”
“Between the two countries there are solid relations that deserve to be safeguarded and fostered, provided this is done in accordance with international conventions related to the sheltering of refugees and dealing with foreign communities”, the newspaper said.
