Governor says priority to restore security in Western Equatoria region
20 October 2005 (NAIROBI) — The newly appointed Governor of Western Equatoria state, Patrick Raphael Zamoi, said his first priority is to improve security in the area so as to pave way for the provision of health, education and roads to the people.
Speaking to Sudan Radio Service (SRS) by satellite telephone from Yambio Zamoi, said “priority starts from security that I have to make sure that the whole area of mine is under full control of security where ever citizen move freely and sleep freely. We can not have a chance of improving sanitation or bringing in any other facility if you don’t have security, the security will hinder the delivery of service to the people that is in the first place”.
On Wednesday 19 October Zamoi arrived in the state’s capital Yambio for the first time since his appointment last month.
The Radio said the governor arrived to a hero’s welcome.
“As long as we have security in the ground secured then I will be in position to deliver the service to the people, before going deeply to health and sanitation you need to maintain the infrastructure that is the road, if you have the road clear and well made then you have the position of transporting the drugs and have necessary assistance to people on the ground.” The governor said.
Zomai further added that the conflict between pastoralists Dinka and the host community in Mundri county has already been resolved. He said the pastoralists will soon move to Shabme where they will wait for the dry season before crossing to Upper Nile region.
In March 2005, a peace conference was held in Tali, in southern Sudan, that established an agreement to allow displaced Dinka Bor safe passage to return to their homeland.
