Salva Kiir vows to fight corruption

Oct 24, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — President of the autonomous government in southern Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit pledged to fight corruption and nepotism in the war-ravaged region on Monday.

Mayardit, who is also Sudan’s First Vice President and leader of the former rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), made the commitment at the inauguration ceremony of the autonomous government.

He underlined the need to provide the displaced in the long- running civil war with basic supplies and necessary services.

Under the January peace deal ending Sudan’s 21-year civil war, the longest in Africa, the southerners are to vote in a referendum on secession after a six-year transitional period.
