UN’s Pronk urges joint panels for national unity, southern govts

Oct 26, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — The UN secretary-general’s special representative in Sudan, Jan Pronk, has urged the government of national unity and the southern Sudan government to hasten and establish commissions and set up joint political committees.

Jan_Pronk_in_khm.jpgDuring a press conference today, he said that establishing this kind of joint institution helps in easing tensions and building trust between the parties in the comprehensive peace agreement.

He said that the acts of building joint military units between the parties of the peace agreement was going on according to the comprehensive peace agreement.

He affirmed that there were no reports of violation to the agreement. He reviewed the ongoing procedures in the framework of the joint military committee, which include UN representatives, the Sudanese armed forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army.

Pronk pointed out that the government had presented 19,500 of its soldiers in this framework and the SPLM 9,000 soldiers.
