Consultations underway to set up petroleum commissions – Sudanese official

Oct 28, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese official said that consultations are underway between the ruling Congress (NC) party and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) to establish Petroleum Commissions.

In a press statement to the state-run SUNA, the spokesperson of the National Constitution Commission (NCC), Al-Dirdiri Mohamed Ahmed said that consultations are currently being conducted between NC and SPLM toward completing establishment of the Evaluation, Resources and Petroleum Commissions, prior to submitting the establishment of these commissions to the President of the Republic for ratification in the coming days.

He further said that set up of these commissions does not require issuing of legislations, as it is the case for the Human Rights, Civil Service and Lands’ Commissions.

Ahmed said that efforts are being intensified currently to form the commissions as soon as possible, especially those which do not require issuance of legislations.

Under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, southern Sudan government will receive 50 percent of oil revenue, the central government 48 percent – and oil-producing areas the remaining two percent.

Sudan produces over 300,000 barrels of oil a day and says output will rise to 500,000 barrels a day by the end of the year.
