Ethiopian-Americans for Democracy
Press Release
October 31, 2005
Ethiopian-Americans for Democracy (EAD) today called
on President Bush to speak up against an impending
blood bath in Ethiopia.
The group also asked the President to distance itself
from a regime that has been implicated in crimes
against humanity. Regimes engaging in egregious human
rights violations should not be condoned, even if they
claim to be allies in the war against terrorism,
Ethiopian Americans for Democracy (EAD) said.
In the aftermath of the controversial May 15, 2005
elections, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has launched an
aggressive, violent campaign to destroy the opposition
through intimidation, arrest on trumped up charges and
murder, according to the letter sent to President Bush
by Ethiopian Americans for Democracy (EAD).
In a 10-page document accompanying its letter, EAD
documented examples of violence, intimidation and
human rights abuses employed by Prime Minister
Zenawi’s group to destroy political opposition during
the last 14 years. The group also documented such
dirty tricks such as false charges and the planting of
evidence.
Of late, Prime Minister Zenawi’s wrath has been
unleashed against the Coalition for Unity and
Democracy (CUD) and other opposition forces, according
to EAD.
Ethiopian Americans for Democracy (EAD) is a US-based
organization that advocates for such democratic ideals
as freedom of speech, assembly, human rights and free
and fair elections.
The United States and the European Union have been the
major backers of Mr. Zenawi’s government, providing
upwards of $20 billion in aid over the last 14 years.
