Sudan’s opposition NDA to present list for unity government Tuesday

Oct 31, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — The oposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will submit Tuesday 1 November its lists for participation in the National Unity Government at the state and federal levels.

NDA_almirghani_garang.jpgNational Congress (NC) secretary for foreign relation Kamal Obeid told reporters that they have received assurances form Notational Democratic Alliance (NDA) to participate in the government of national Unity.

Meanwhile, NC deputy chairman Nafie Ali Nafei welcomed this step, saying that the joining of the NDA comes for the benefit of the national unity and the political stability in the country.

Earlier in October, Sudanese largest opposition alliance said that the allocation of only two seats in Khartoum’s new national unity Cabinet was unsatisfactory and asked for negotiations to increase its share.

The two ministries given to the NDA in the government of national unity – science and education – remained vacant.

Sudan’s new national unity Cabinet was sworn in last September after a two-week delay caused by tough wrangling between the ruling party and former southern rebels of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army. The government was set up under a peace accord signed in January between the SPLA and the government, ending a 21-year civil war.
