UNESCO hosts Sudanese events within culture year and Arabia Plan

Oct 31, 2005 (PARIS) — The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced it is organizing on November 7 in Paris a number of events linked with Khartoum as “Arab Cultural Capital for 2005,” including a concert and exhibit and an examination of the roots of Nubian Sudanese archaeology and heritage.

According to the Kuwaiti news agency KUNA, the day will include a conference opened by UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura, and by Kuwait’s Abdulrazzak Al-Nafisi, Permanent Representative to UNESCO and President of the Consultative Committee of the Arabia Plan, and by Abdelasit Badawi Al-Sanosi, Sudans Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to the UN organization.

There will be significant input from French intellectual circles, including the French Institute and the French College, which will provide expert speakers for the conference. The National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) will also participate, as will experts from UNESCO.

The Nubian Heritage exhibit will run at UNESCO headquarters until November 14 and the overall initiative is part of a joint operation by “Khartoum, Arab Cultural Capital 2005” and the Arab group presided by Al-Nafisi and which seeks to promote dialogue with other cultures in the world.
