Sudan FM, Canada delegation discuss peace implementation

Nov 12, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — The foreign affairs minister, Lam Akol, briefed the visiting Canadian delegation led by the Canadian prime minister’s adviser, Robert Fouler, on the steps being taken by the government of national unity to implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

During his meeting with the Canadian delegation, which also included the Canadian peace envoy to Sudan, Mobeena Jaffar, the minister of foreign affairs called on the international community to meet the pledges it made during the Oslo donors conference.

On the Darfur issue, the minister pointed out that the government was committed to a peaceful political settlement to the issue, expressing hope that the rebel leadership would unite and come to the next round of talks as a united delegation with a clear vision so that the required success is achieved in the next round of talks in Abuja.

Lam Akol affirmed the government’s readiness to provide all possible help, particularly logistics, which would facilitate the smooth flow of humanitarian aid and any other necessary assistance to the African Union forces operating in Darfur.

The minister conveyed to the Canadian delegation the desire of the Sudanese government to revive the bilateral cooperation between the two countries in all domains and expressed hope that the Canadian development agency would resume its activities in Sudan.
