Beshir re-elected leader of Sudan’s ruling party
Nov 25, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese President Omar Hassan Ahmed el-Bashir was re-elected chairman of Sudan’s National Congress (NC) party here on Thursday.
Bashir will be the only candidate of the NC party to run for the next presidential election.
He was elected at a three-day general conference of the NC which kicked off on Wednesday.
Secretary General of the NC Ibrahim Ahmed Omer said the result of the election showed members of the party supported policies of the current government led by Bashir and affirmed its achievements.
The NC became Sudan’s ruling party in 1989. At its first general conference in October 1999, Bashir was elected leader of the party.
In August this year, the NC formed a national unity government with the People’s Liberation Movement, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and a number of other political parties.
