Sudan’s ruling party wraps up general conference

Nov 25, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan’s National Congress (NC) party wrapped up here on Friday its three-day general conference which discussed a wide range of issues in the country’s political, social and economic domains.

Sudanese President and Chairman of the NC Omar al-Bashir and his first and second deputies, Salva Kiir Mayardit and Ali Osman Mohamed Taha, attended the closing session of the conference.

The conference endorsed several recommendations, including implementing fully the north-south comprehensive peace agreement, seeking political solutions to end conflicts in Sudan’s western region of Darfur and in the east of the country, as well as expanding membership of the party on the basis of consultation.

Members of the ruling NC party have unanimously re-elected al- Bashir as its candidate for the next presidential elections.

The meeting also approved a plan to restructure the Sudanese economy in order to meet the demands of the current stage of peace and development in the country.

The conference, which kicked off on Wednesday in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, has gathered about 6,000 NC members, a number of leaders and representatives of other Sudanese political parties and civil and religious organizations as well as foreign ambassadors.
