South Sudanese celebrate FM radio
Dec 6, 2005 (LIRA,North Uganda) — The people of Southern Sudan are celebrating the establishment of its first independent FM radio Station in the town of Juba by a Ugandan based British national.
Gordon Bell, the Executive Director of Information Outreach, established Liberty 89 FM together with the former Mayor of Juba, Mr Peter Yata.
Gordon owns radio stations in Tororo and Moroto and a Television station in Lira.
“The radio station is a new thing in the area, people are very excited,” Yata told Daily Monitor in Lira shortly before leaving for Sudan in a Land Rover on Tuesday.
Previously Juba had one radio station that broadcast mostly Arabic and Islamic programmes.
