Naivasha agreement will not endanger national security- Defence minister

KHARTOUM, Oct. 13, 2003 (SUNA) — The Minister of Defence, Maj-Gen Bakri Hasan Salih, affirmed that the recent agreement on security and military arrangements signed between the government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) will pave the way for peace in Sudan.

This came in his briefing to the National Assembly Monday about the recent agreement on security and military arrangements during the interim which was signed by the government and the SPLM in Naivasha, Kenya.

He described the agreement as a strategic one and would never endanger the national security of Sudan, explaining that the agreement will bolster the mutual confidence between the citizens of Sudan.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ahmad Ibrahim al- Tahir, hailed the role of the armed forces in defending the unity and stability of Sudan.

He described the Naivasha agreement as a strong indicator for the coming peace, indicating that the Chairman of the Assembly’s Security and Defence Committee and the Chairman of the Peace Committee will leave for Nairobi on Tuesday to participate in the peace process.

He explained that Abache agreement for peace in Darfur [signed between the government and the Sudan Liberation Movement SLM] is a real indicator for security and stability.
