Darfur: Abduction and Torture of IDPs

On 04 December 2005, armed militias reportedly the Janjaweed attacked three Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) including two women from Kalma IDP camp, Nyala, Southern Darfur State. The IDPs were flogged all over their body and beaten on their heads, backs and arms with the butt of guns.� The militias also abducted one female IDP. �The details of the IDPs are as follows:

1. Mona Ibrahim Salih, (22 yrs), Fur tribe, W, (Abducted)

2. Fatouma Aldouma Mohamed, (35yrs), Fur tribe, W, (Sustained serious injuries to her face and arms)

3. Abdella Adam Salih, (36 yrs), Fur tribe, M, (Sustained serious wounds on his back)

The incident has been reported to Nyala Wasat police station. Fatouma Aldouma Mohamed and Abdella Adam Salih are receiving medical treatment at SOAT partner organisation, Amel Centre for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture in Nyala. The whereabouts of Mona Ibrahim Salih is unknown.

SOAT strongly condemns the continued targeting and torture of IDPs especially women and girls by armed militias in Darfur. SOAT urges the Government of Sudan to:

i. Investigate the torture of all the IDPs and the abduction of Mona Ibrahim Salih; and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice;

ii. Identify and bring to justice all security apparatus militias responsible for attacks on civilians in Darfur;

iii. Immediately take all steps required to prevent attacks, threats, intimidations and any other form of violence against IDPs in Darfur;

iv. End impunity for crimes committed by security officers and government proxy militias in Darfur;

v. Ensure respect for rights to fair trial and to legal appeal in accordance with international human rights standards, for all detainees throughout Sudan;

vi. Guarantee respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms throughout Sudan in accordance with national laws and international human rights standards.
