UN envoy heads to Abuja to push Darfur talks

Jan_Pronk_in_khm.jpgDec 10, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — The UN envoy to Sudan, Jan Pronk, will leave for the Nigerian capital, Abuja, on Sunday 11 December in a bid to give impetus to the peace talks between the government and the armed groups in Darfur.

The UN mission in Sudan said Pronk’s visit was aimed at pushing the peace process forward so that a peace agreement can be reached.

Before going to Abuja, Pronk will visit some locations where UN offices are based, such as Rumbek and Wau in southern Sudan.

The UN mission said during the past week the Darfur region had witnessed clashes between the Darfur rebel Sudan Liberation Movement and other armed groups.

The mission also said that the situation in Western Darfur State in particular, raised serious concern due to the attacks carried out by the Darfur rebel Reform and Development Movement on a police station and five AU officers last month.
