Ugandan army kills 4 LRA rebels along border with Sudan

Dec 12, 2005 (KAMPALA) — The Uganda People’ s Defense Force(UPDF) has killed four Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) fighters, recovered four guns and other assortments of weapons along the border with Sudan, according to a government radio report on Monday.

UPDF 5th division spokesman Lt. Deo Akiki was quoted as saying that the operation took place over the weekend at Lipon Kitgum at the Uganda-Sudan borders.

The spokesman said the operation commanded by Major Jackson Kayanja is part of what the army has dubbed “a special dry season offensive against the LRA.”

Akiki disclosed that the killed rebels were part of the group deployed in these areas to specifically ambush vehicles from southern Sudan, saying that the killed rebels belong to the same group that killed Sudanese at Teritenia recently.

He said since they launched the operation, an average of two tofive rebels are killed, captured and surrendered on daily basis.

The LRA rebels have killed tens of thousands of civilians and displaced over 1.4 million people in their 19-year rebellion in northern Uganda.
