Sudan peace gains at stake unless AIDS reined in

Dec 13, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) warned on Tuesday that Sudan’s peace gains will be offset unless the spreading HIV/AIDS pandemic is treated.

UNICEF said in a report that the situation of HIV/AIDS in Sudan is serious, because 1.6 percent of Sudan’s adults and 3-8 percent of youth have been infected.

Among 6,000 Sudanese youth HIV carriers, 300 of them are under 25, the report said.

One percentage of women are also infected with the disease, among whom 2-3 percent are expectants, it added.
