Kenya, Ethiopia in joint security meeting

Dec 16, 2005 (NAIROBI) — A joint security meeting between Kenya and Ethiopia is under way to bring together 120 elders from the Boran and Gabra communities living across the common border.

The meeting, which is being held at a town in Ethiopia, is said to iron our insecurity differences between the two communities permanently, the Kenyan radio reported.

Both Moyale and Marsabit district in northern Kenya security teams led the 60 Kenyan elders.

The other 60 Ethiopia elders drawn from the neighbouring area are led by Justice and Security Office of Boran Administrative Zone Abala Ayele.

The meeting, scheduled to take three days, is organized by both the Kenyan and Ethiopian governments and will focus on tribal conflict between the two communities.

The security meeting comes in the wake of Turbi massacre last July in which over ninety people were left dead and hundreds of livestock stolen during a raid in the area by bandits.
