According to a senior government official who attended the discussion, Prime Minister Meles also reaffirmed the foreign minister his readiness to play a role in the efforts launched for the peaceful resolution of the border tension between the two countries.

Chad’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmat Allam-Mi told journalists after the discussion that Ethiopia’s role is crucial for the peaceful resolution of the border tension between his country and the Sudan.

He also indicated that he has delivered a message from Chadian President Idriss Deby to Prime Minister Meles.

Foreign Minister Ahmat said the objective of his visit to Ethiopia was to alert the Ethiopian government and people, whom he described as friends of both Sudan and Chad, to seek solution for the tension between the two countries.

Though there has been a longstanding friendship between governments and peoples of Chad and the Sudan, tensions have mounted along the common border between the two countries, Ahmat said.
