Southern Sudan cabinet sets up commission to probe Cairo massacre

Jan 5, 2005 (JUBA) — In an extraordinary meeting Southern Sudan government headed by Lt. Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit has decided to set up a commission to investigate circumstances of the death of the Sudanese refugees in the Egyptian capital.

The spokesperson of the southern Sudan cabinet, Samson Kwaje, said in a press statement to the state-run SUNA that the cabinet charged the ministerial panel to meet the refugees and exhort them to come back to Sudan.

He said the commission would explain to the Sudanese refugees the anger and discontentment of government on what happened. He further indicated that the delegation would express the dissatisfaction of southern Sudan government to the UNHCR over the adopted conduct towards the refugees.

The government of Southern Sudan has strongly condemned the Egyptian government’s killing of innocent peaceful Sudanese refugees.
