One AU peacekeeper killed, 10 others injured – report
Jan 6, 2005 (AL-FASHIR) — The African Union troops were this morning attacked by members of Sudan Liberation Movement loyal to Manni Arkoi Minawi at Jarjirah Locality on the Sudanese-Chadian border and border of Western and Northern Darfur states.
According to the pro-ruling party the Sudanese media Center, one of the AU troops (of Senegalese nationality) was killed and 10 others wounded. Those injured were in a critical condition .
The rebels took over an AU vehicle and fled with it.
An AU plane landed at Al-Fashir Airport this evening and airlifted those injured to a hospital belonging to the AU in Al-Fashir.
Meanwhile in a statement signed by the northern Darfur governor, Yusif Mohamed Osman Kibir, the government of northern Darfur state condemned the attack on the AU forces and held the Darfur rebels responsible for the persistent violence in the region.
The statement urged the armed rebels not to attack the AU as such acts were not a good reflection on the people of Darfur.
