Slovenia urges world to act in Darfur crisis

Jan 12, 2006 (LJUBLJANA) — The Slovene Foreign Ministry has called the international community to support President Janez Drnovsek’s initiative about the humanitarian crisis in Darfur.

Janez_Drnovsek.jpgDrnovsek has recently suggested that together with several Slovene humanitarian organizations, the country should set up a camp for 10,000 refugees.

In a press release circulated on Thursday, the ministry said it valued highly the president’s efforts, but added that it was concerned about the actual effectiveness of potential measures, especially if Slovenia is to act alone.

“Slovenia’s initiative will have more effect if it manages to get the support of the international community. We therefore urge the EU, NATO and above all the UN to act swiftly for the benefit of the Sudanese people,” the press release also said.

The ministry adds that Slovenia as a member of international organizations is already contributing its part to resolving the situation in Darfur, it is, nevertheless, ready to do more – “even though our aid potential has limitations we should be aware of”.

The ministry also expressed concern over the security aspect of Drnovsek’s planned visit to the region planed in February, saying it does not oppose the idea while at the same time pointing to the costs this “security risk” would entail.

It further suggested that it might make sense to discuss such an important initiative in parliament.

A week ago Drnovsek met representatives of leading humanitarian organizations in Slovenia presenting a joint humanitarian project for the region of Darfur, suggesting the setting up of a refugee camp.
