Former ambassador to Sudan joins Eritrean opposition
KHARTOUM, Oct 20 (AFP) — Eritrea’s former ambassador in Sudan, Abdallah Adam Omar, said Monday he would join the Eritrean opposition in its bid to overthrow the government of Issaias Afeworki in Asmara.
Omar, who defected last year and then obtained asylum in England, told reporters he was visiting Sudan to help coordinate efforts for “removing the oppressive regime of Issaias Afeworki” in Eritrea.
“I am here for consultation with the Sudanese political forces and with the Eritrean opposition on the ways and means of removing the regime in Asmara,” Omar said at the Sudan Media Centre.
He added he is not affiliated with any Eritrean political party or organisation, but “I am ready to cooperate with anyone for achieving the Eritrean people’s goal” of toppling Afeworki’s regime.
