On February 2, Africa Action will be joined by scores of activists for a
rally outside the White House to call on the President to use the
opportunity of the U.S. presidency of the United Nations (UN) Security
Council in February to lead the international community to take action
in response to the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan.
Thursday’s event will feature prominent speakers and creative street
theater, as well as an act of civil disobedience by some participants,
who wish to display the depth of their concern about the crisis in
Darfur and the need for an urgent U.S. response.
The rally will call on the U.S. to introduce a new resolution at the UN
Security Council that would (1) “re-hat” the African Union (AU) mission
in Darfur as a UN operation, granting it a strong mandate from the
international community to protect civilians and humanitarian
operations, and (2) authorize a UN force to be deployed as soon as
possible to Darfur to augment the AU mission.
As the situation in Darfur continues to deteriorate, momentum is
building for a UN intervention in support of the AU operation in that
troubled region. This event marks the latest in a series of nationwide
events and initiatives, generating mounting pressure on the Bush
Administration to take new action as President of the Security Council
in February to stop the genocide in Darfur. For more information, see
