Eritrean opposition EDP welcomes UN report

Eritrean Democratic Party (EDP)

Press Release

Feb 9, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — The Eritrean Democratic Party received with a deep grief the recent report of the UN Panel of experts. The report claimed that the Government of Eritrea has provided, and probably continues to provide, arms, logistical support, military training and political support to both Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA).

Training of JEM and SLA has reportedly occurred at a number of camps in Eritrea on the Eritrea-Sudan border, the report added.

However, it is not a new phenomenon for the people of Eritrea and Eritrean Democratic Party that the regime has hosted and providing military training and support to rebels in the region since 1994. However, it is good that the international community has started to give attention to that the regime is playing a negative role in the political development of the region against the will of the Eritrean people.

The report by the UN panel shows additionally that the regime in Eritrea is a destabilising factor in the region. The international community should call on the regime to refrain from providing military support to rebels and find a comprehensive peaceful solution of the crisis in Darfur. If not, the international community should take appropriate measures against the regime in Asmara, says Mussie Ephrem from the Eritrean Democratic Party.

The Eritrean Democratic Party calls on the regime to refrain from providing any such military support and from any act that might contribute to further destabilisation of the situation on the region.
