Sudan civil wars contribute to the depopulation of wildlife

15 February 2006 (KHARTOUM) — A top Sudanese wildlife conservationist has said that civil wars in the south, west and east of Sudan have contributed to the depopulation of wildlife.

In a press statemet to the Nairobi based Sudan radio service (SRS), the Director of Dinder National Game Park, Doctor Mutasim Basher, said that because of civil strife the national parks were poorly managed.

He also said internally displaced persons who encroached on some of the national game parks contributed to the destruction of the Environment and eco-tourism.

Bashir: “Now we are raising the awareness of the community about the park and its significance through development of village development committees. We are also able to use a revolving fund for meeting some of their demands and for implementing some of the alternative methods for raising funds.”

He further said that Dinder National Park recently received 75 thousand U-S dollars for implementing community projects around the park.
