Southern Sudanese leader condemns attack on student union chairman

Feb 21, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — Head of the SPLM/A [Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army] and parliamentarian in the National Assembly Yasir Arman has said the attack on the chairman of Khartoum University Student Union (KUSU), Akot Dot, is unjustifiable and should be condemned.
Akot is the first southern student to assume the KUSU chairmanship since the university was called Gordon Memorial College.

The current KUSU committee is elected on 11 May 2005. since 2003 the list of the National Democratic Alliance won the elections.

Arman added that the SPLM/A parliamentarians will take the legal procedures to support KUSU and its chairman, adding that police patrol committed such a horrible attack.
“We confirm that our position towards the bill resolution of criminal law is true” Arman further said.

Arman also added: “Akot is a member of the SPLM and faced insults and harassment before, his house was inspected by police alleging that he sells alcohol.”

Arman indicated that the incident reflected a parochial political vision and a social insensitivity towards Sudanese society components.

In a press statement from the National Assembly Arman urged to form an investigation committee for the incident, particularly after [Akot ] was assaulted harmfully and left the prison without treatment. [Sentence as published]
