Salva Kiir – Church has to boost development programmes in S Sudan
Feb 22, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — The First Vice-President and President of the government of southern Sudan (GOSS), Lt-Gen Salva Kiir Mayardit, has pointed out the need for the church to boost development programmes in the field of health and education in southern Sudan.
Speaking at a meeting with the visiting Vatican representative, His Eminence Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, president Kiir outlined the programmes of the GOSS in various field of social and economic development.
Kiir went on to explain threats posed by the Ugandan rebel movement Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) to the peace being witnessed throughout southern Sudan and welcomed his eminence to Juba.
Earlier on, Bahr al Jabal State governor Maj-Gen Clement Wani Konga, described the visit of His Eminence Crescenzio Cardinal Sepe to Juba as a blessing.
He extended through him an invitation to His Holiness the Pope to visit the Sudan so as to strengthen the church and the Christian faith in the country.
Cardinal Sepe said he brought blessings and best wishes from His Holiness the Pope Benedict XVI, who has special prayers and concern for Sudan.
