Eritrean president, Sudanese vice president discuss bilateral relations

Feb 24, 2006 (ASMARA) — President Isayas Afewerki yesterday, 23 February, in Massawa held talks with the Sudanese First Vice-President and president of Southern Sudan government, Lt-Gen Salva Kiir Mayardit.

Kiir_Afwerki_Asmara_20051201.jpgDuring the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations between Eritrea and Sudan and the peace process in Sudan.

According to the Eritrean radio, Afewerki said Eritrea will relentlessly try as ever before to continue its constructive relations with Sudan and reaffirmed that Eritrea will also work to further enhance the existing relations with the Government of National Unity of Sudan.

He also expressed the Eritrean government’s utmost desire to see a comprehensive political solution in Sudan.

Salva Kiir on his part told President Isayas that the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) by being part and parcel of the government of national unity will exert more efforts for the implementation of the peace agreement by adhering to the peace process.

He also briefed the Eritrean president about the challenges encountered while trying to bring a comprehensive political solution in Sudan after the formation of the government of national unity. He expressed his desire to further enhance the relations between Eritrea and Sudan.

The Sudanese delegation led by Lt-Gen Salva Kiir left for Sudan today from Massawa International Airport. Eritrean Defence Minister Gen Sebaht Efrem and other senior government official saw him off.
