Ethiopia signs extradition accord with Eastern Africa countries

Feb 28, 2006 (ADDIS ABABA) — The Ethiopian Ministry of Federal Affairs and the Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization (EAPCCO) on Tuesday signed an agreement on extradition of convicted criminals and fugitives in the Horn of Africa.

The agreement would reportedly enable to jointly control criminals and fugitives as well as fight terrorism, the state-run ENA reported.

After signing the agreement, Ethiopian Minister of Federal Affairs Siraj Fegesa said apart from strengthening the already established collaborative works, the agreement is of immense significance in maintaining peace and stability at the continental level.

Siraj said Ethiopia being a founding member of the INTERPOL, has been actively participating in the activities of INTERPOL and is efficiently discharging its responsibilities.

According to the minister, the country has exerted significant efforts to fight terrorism and crimes at the continental and international level.

Police Commissioner of Kenya and the current Chairman of EAPCCO, Major General Mohammed Hussein Ali on the occasion commended the government of Ethiopia, the Addis Ababa City Administration, the Federal as well as the Addis Ababa Police Commissions for facilitating the signing of the agreement.
