Arab League, African Union coordinate efforts on Darfur crisis

Mar 12, 2006 (CAIRO) — Arab League General Secretary Amr Mousa said on Sunday that the league is working in coordination with the African Union to resolve major issues in Africa including the Darfur crisis.

Responding to journalists after a meeting with the visiting speaker of the Sudan’s National Assembly, Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Taher, Mousa said that he respects the decision made by the African Union Peace and Security Council to extend the peace-keeping mission of the union in the Darfur region to six more months.

Mousa said the partnership of the African Union and the Arab league is vital in working together on issues concerning the African continent specially the Darfur region, adding that big responsibility lie upon them to work out all relevant issues.

The Arab League secretary general stressed on the importance of the upcoming summit in Cairo, during which leaders of Egypt, Sudan, and Libya will discuss the Darfur question.
