Sudan forms panel to review options to resolve Darfur crisis

Mar 19, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — In a meeting chaired by the First Vice President Salva Kiir Mayadrit, the Sudanese cabinet decided to form a political committee that comprises all parties of the Government of National Unity to review possible options to resolve Darfur crisis.

Salva_Kiir_ap.jpgIn doing so, the Council of ministers wants to explore ways that would help the parties negotiating in Abuja, Nigeria, to reach a peaceful and comprehensive political settlement as soon as possible.

The Council pointed out in its meeting to the importance of rallying efforts of all political forces and coordinating them in a way that would boost peace and stability in Darfur.

The Council has meanwhile approved a report presented by the Minister of Federal Government Abdelbasit Sabdarat, on behalf of the Foreign Minister Lam Akol, on the resolutions of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council on Darfur.

President Omar al-Bashir, left the country for the Kenyan capital Nairobi today to participate in the regional Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) heads of state summit while, the FM Lam Akol participates in the preparatory meetings of the summit.

He said that the plan was agreed upon for reaching a resolution to the question of Darfur, for rallying support to Sudan and achieving stability and security in the region and revoking tension with neighboring countries.

The spokesperson for the Council of ministers, Omer Mohamed Salih, has stressed in press statements that the recommendations have welcomed the extension of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) mandate for six months, the rallying of possible support for the success of the AU mission in Darfur as well leading an intensive political action with the neighboring and friendly countries.
