Sudan’s opposition PC says Turabi’s statements are positive
Mar 24, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — The political secretary of the opposition Popular Congress party (PC), Bashir Adam Rahamah has said he regards the statements made by the party’s secretary general Hassan al-Turabi to the Al-Arabia TV channel as positive and in the interest of the nation.
The NC suspended any contacts with the PC after a statement made to the Al-Arabiya TV on 17 March. Turabi who was a leading figure in the Sudanese regime at that time, accused some prominent Sudanese officials of being involved in the Egyptian president assassination plot in the Ethiopian capital in June 1995.
Rahamah said al-Turabi’s statements had two positive sides as they absolved both the Islamic movement and the country’s leadership from the conspiracies hatched by certain individuals.
He said that the statements were based on the verse from the Koran “those who do not reveal the truth are sinners”.
Ragamah reaffirmed that the PC had no objection to enter into dialogue with any party and accused the ruling National Congress (NC) of lacking seriousness to enter into negotiations.
He further reiterated the PNC’s desire to hold talks with all the political forces, including the NC, and revealed that contacts had been made between the PC and the Communist Party following al-Turabi’s statements.
In this regard, the official spokesman for the Communist Party, Youcif Hussein, told the local press that al-Turabi’s statements were a step towards dialogue. He further pointed to conditions set by the party in order to enter into talks with the PC, including an account of everything that occurred following the June 1989 military coup.
