Bush extends sanctions against Sudan for another year

DALLAS, Texas, Oct 29 (AFP) — US President George W. Bush has extended sanctions against Sudan, first applied in 1997, for another year, the White House said in a statement Wednesday.

“Because the actions and policies of the government of Sudan continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States” the sanctions “must continue in effect beyond November 3, 2003,” the White House said during a visit by Bush to Dallas.

While Sudan has been on a US list of countries accused of supporting international terrorism since 1993, Washington first placed an economic embargo against Sudan in November 1997 under the National Emergencies Act.
