Oromo ruling party says committed to uphold economic growth

April 2, 2006 (ADDIS ABABA) — The member of the Ethiopian coalition Oromo People’s Democratic Organization (OPDO) pledged to exert concerted efforts to sustain the economic growth registered in the country over the past three years at the national level in general and in the Oromia State in particular, Arada sub-City OPDO secretary general said.

In a statement to the official ENA, Fekadu Bekele said OPDO would assiduously work to enhance ongoing democratization and economic growth registered in the country.

He was speaking at an event organized to celebrate the 16th anniversary of OPDO here on Sunday.

In a mention to the opposition Oromo Liberation Front, Fekadu said anti-peace and development forces in collaboration with some foreign forces are plotting to hamper the ongoing development endeavors.

He said such subversive actions are being foiled owing to active public struggle.

Fekadu said ensuring speedy development, dependable peace and democracy are the aims of the OPDO.

Representative of the Meles Zenawi’s Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) said the people of Oromo like those of the peoples of Tigray and South had been oppressed. The TPLF is the core of the ruling coalition Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF)

The representative urged OPDO to mobilize the Oromo people and the other peoples of Ethiopia to ensure democratic unity in the country.

Similarly, representative of the Amhara Nationals Democratic Movement (ANDM) – another member of thr ruling coalition — said various activities enabling to ensure peace, democracy and development have been executed in the Oromia and other parts of the country over the past 14 years.

Representative of the member of the ruling coalition Southern Ethiopia Peoples Democratic Movement (SEPDM) said nations and nationalities are enjoying peace and democracy secured after joint struggle of nations and nationalities.

A number of natives of Oromo in the sub-city and other invited guests attended the event.
